Beauty is the harmony of diverse parts, their harmony, their symmetry.

To develop a complete mind study the science of art, study the art of science, learn how to see, realise that everything connects to everything else.

This also extends to our perception of human beauty. The balance of facial features and what we perceive as a beautiful smile are intimately interlinked. To achieve beauty in dental cosmetic treatment we do not simply design and provide a smile but base this smile around your unique facial features to provide a symmetry and harmony to your appearance.

This is an artistic and creative process as well as a scientific one and results in the ideal natural balance which results in facial beauty from a smile that is designed for you as an individual.

Your initial consultation for this design process encompasses an assessment of you as a complete patient, not simply your teeth. We take into account your unique facial proportions and study the symmetry of your features before your dental exam and assessment of your teeth.

Our approach which Dr Morrison studied in the USA is unique to our practice. It enables you to spend time assessing the appearance of your final outcome of cosmetic treatment before preparation of your teeth and encompasses not just the improvement of your teeth but achieving harmony of facial balance, ideal proportions of your restorations and the relationship of your gum levels and lips to your final restorations.

Our techniques enable us to provide you with a smile that is uniquely designed for you as an individual taking into account every element of your facial features.

Our approach to cosmetic dentistry ...science meets art in pursuit of excellence

A beautiful smile is not simply achieved by altering and treating teeth. The process must involve the careful observation of you as an individual. The shape of your face, lips and jaws, your skin colour, your ethnicity, the form of your lips and face when you smile and at rest plus your vision of what you would appreciate as a beautiful smile. This is all assessed and the process becomes a mixture of artistic appreciation combined with the application of what we know are the “cosmetic ideals” in the relationship of teeth. In this way we can create harmony and symmetry in the smile using several disciplines in aesthetic dentistry.

This may involve cosmetic orthodontics, cosmetic gum remodelling with soft tissue lasers, the use of aesthetic composites, crowns, veneers and bleaching.

Every cosmetic patient is carefully and fully assessed during the initial consultation.

Each case is individual. We have no fixed plan for cosmetic treatment as much of this discipline of dentistry is about what you would like to see achieved. Beauty and the perception of beauty is a very individual thing and we work with you, advising you on the best approaches and on what the eye perceives as beauty as we work towards your final plan of treatment.

If we are providing crowns and/or veneers you will have placement of temporary restorations before any preparation is performed on your teeth. This is a unique approach where we build your smile using flowable composite and shaping this to mimic the exact form and size of your planned final result. This liquid composite is sculpted to let you see exactly the how the final restorations will look. You can then spend time at home checking that your smile is exactly as you would like it. When you return for your preparation appointment we can make any adjustments that you would like and proceed to prepare your teeth for the final restorations.

These are fabricated by our expert ceramists and while this is being done you have temporary restorations fitted again.

The next appointment involves the bonding of your crowns or veneers with a final review appointment 7 days later to ensure you are happy with the result and we can also perform any minor adjustments and polishing that may be necessary.

Unlike other more direct approaches to the provision of cosmetic restorations our approach allows you to be absolutely certain that your smile will be exactly as you want before we even begin preparation of your teeth. In this way we create a beautiful smile and your teeth will show the harmony and symmetry applicable to you as an individual and not a common generic result.

Cosmetic
Orthodontics

This the process of realigning your anterior teeth to correct crowding and give you an even, aesthetically pleasing smile. We use bonded orthodontic appliances which are transparent with a deformable wire which is white in colour. Most cases can be completed in 6 to 9 months and some sooner depending on the severity of your crowding.

Cosmetic orthodontics can be a standalone treatment with your final smile achieved purely using orthodontics or as a preliminary treatment to realign your teeth prior to the placement of ceramic veneers or crowns.

Every patient is carefully assessed in consultation with a consultant orthodontist to assure you of the best and quickest possible result for your treatment.

In the case of complete cosmetics the realignment of your teeth combined with the provision of ceramic restorations can provide you with a smile that is both harmonic and natural which fulfils all the criteria that the human eye regards as beautiful.

With our system you get predictable and rapid results using a fixed appliance that is tooth coloured so minimises the effect on your smile during treatment.

Cosmetic
Contouring

This is the art of subtly changing the shape, size and level of teeth to give the appearance of a more even smile. Cosmetic contouring can be used when you have minimal crowding and there is no necessity for orthodontic treatment.

The angles of teeth can be subtly altered to change the way light is reflected which the eye perceives as a more even dentition. Combined with adjusting the levels of teeth to the cosmetic ideal this can be a simple but very effective way to giving you a better smile.

Cosmetic
Gingival (gum)

Recontouring

One of the first steps in our cosmetic assessment of your teeth is an examination of the gum level. An even level gives us symmetry and harmony across the front teeth and the correct level of the gum determines the ideal aesthetic size of your teeth related to the shape of your face, your lips and the levels of your lips at rest and when you smile.

The correction of these levels if required is an early stage in your cosmetic treatment. Simple correction is easily and rapidly achieved using a soft tissue laser. If more extensive correction is needed a surgical approach may be necessary which again is a relatively simple process.

Gingival sculpture is an integral part of our cosmetic treatment and by providing you with the ideal vertical gum level and the ideal horizontal gum planes you can then be assured that final ceramic restorations will exactly conform to the aesthetic ideal for you as an individual and provide an even, beautiful smile.

Teeth
Whitening

This can be carried out as a standalone treatment or following more extensive cosmetic realignment to whiten your teeth. There are two approaches to tooth whitening. The first is an in surgery process involving the application of the whitening agent to your teeth followed by the placement of a bleaching lamp to activate the product. Your appointment is usually for 90 minutes and you can comfortably lie back and watch your choice of television from terrestrial, satellite or Netflix on the HD screen above the dental chair using wireless earphones.

The second involves the making of custom fitting bleaching trays which you use at home with the bleaching kit we provide for you. Generally these are worn overnight until you achieve the desired shade.

We highly recommend both in surgery and at home bleaching to ensure you get the results you desire. Tooth whitening is now a simple process and can make a great difference to the shade of your teeth and the intensity of your smile.

Crowns &
Veneers

To achieve the very best cosmetic result it may be necessary to place either crowns or veneers on your teeth. We will carefully assess which is best for you and your dentition early on in your treatment process.

Both crowns and veneers can be used to restore the shape, size, colour and relationship between your teeth and to give you an even, striking and harmonic smile.

Crowns

A crown is used when it is necessary to cover the whole tooth with the restoration. In the majority of our cosmetic cases the crowns are made of ceramic which has a lifelike beauty and can incorporate all the variations in tooth colour and translucency that can be seen in natural teeth.

Composite / White
Fillings

For the restoration of teeth we only place white fillings. In posterior teeth we use a mixture of flowable composite, a ceramic based composite and paintable stains. This is bonded to the tooth structure ensuring you have a restoration that is both strong and indistinguishable from the natural tooth surrounding it.

Anteriorly we can use composite for restoration of cavities, cosmetic build up of teeth, closing spaces between your teeth and composite veneers. The system we use consists of multiple shades and is built up using a layering technique to ensure we retain the tooth’s natural shade variation and translucency. We also use paintable stains to give character to the composite. This is an artistic approach which produces a cosmetic result that is both beautiful and smile enhancing.
